Ecological vegetable growing – Is it needed?

In recent years ecological food is becoming more and more popular. Society wants to eat healthy products, of known origin and free of harmful chemicals that have an impact on our health. Where to get such food? The answer is simple – you should ask the source, which in this case are farmers.

Despite the demand for ecological products is large, only a few producers decide to grow ecological vegetable.

Recently, our company, thanks to cooperation with dealers from Germany had the opportunity to participate in Open Farm Day, where breeders grow ecological crops.

The farms of Daniel Riesener and Daniel Götze are one of the examples of ecological food production. Since 2015, men have been owners of a vegetable farm focusing on ecological food production. It is directed mainly to the fresh market. In June this year, producers and owners of the Bio-Alpakaland company organized an Open Day which was conjugated with a demonstration of agricultural machinery. The event met with great interest from agricultural producers from the area of Wilhelmshayn, Germany.
We also had the pleasure to take part in this event.

HOW TO LEAD AN ECOLOGICAL VEGETABLE FARM?

Keeping ecological crops is definitely more difficult than conventional. It requires the use of a much more workload as well as anticipating and preventing the unfavorable development of events. However organic production also offers wide opportunities for farm development as well as opportunities to achieve higher profits.
The question is: What to do to produce high-quality ecological vegetables and at the same time reducing production costs?

HOW TO CHOOSE AGRICULTURAL EQUIPMENT FOR ECOLOGICAL CULTIVATION OF VEGETABLES?

Undoubtedly, in this case, it is extremely important to use precise and permanent agricultural equipment. The BIO-Alpakaland company chose this type of vegetable growing equipment.

In the case of ecological root vegetable growing, the cultivation process starts from the best possible soil preparation for sowing seeds. Deeply fluffed and well-aerated soil gives better conditions for plant’ s growth. Ridge forming machines with soil miller AUR are dedicated to root vegetable breeders and work great. During a few-hour meeting of vegetable growers, our company presented the work of this machine and conducted a short training of the service principles. Results of the work were monitored by the meeting’s participants. The farmers measured the height and width of the side surfaces of ridges, spacing between them and also checked the strength and quality of  the ridges.

The other machine, which is necessary for growing vegetables is seeder. A very important feature of a good seeder is the ability to set the sowing parameters and, above all, the number of seeds sown. This is particularly important in ecological farming, due to higher purchase costs of seed compared to conventional production. This task is fulfilled by the MAX PNEUMATIC vegetable seeder. Its characteristic feature is very high precision. A number of regulatory mechanisms used in this machine enable the selection of appropriate working parameters depending on soil conditions or the type of sown seeds. All these functions make that machine perfectly sows different types of seeds –  using the appropriate disc.

The demonstration of the machine’s work was preceded by the machine’s presentation. Producers learned the principles of seeder’s work and functions of particular modules. After a short training, the producers who came to the meeting had a chance on individual assessment of sowing’s quality.

HOW TO PICK VEGETABLES FOR A FRESH MARKET?

Root vegetables grown by the owners of the BIO-Alpakaland company are directed to the fresh market. To make it possible, it is necessary to use equipment that will allow digging vegetables out of the ground and removing haulms or leaves. ALINA SUPERNOVA harvester perfectly fulfills this task. The machine digs roots from the ground. It cleanses them and then transports vegetables directly to the trailer. It can be also another version of the harvester to the pallet box placed on the device. Root vegetables harvested in this way can be stored or sold on the fresh market.

IS IT WORTH TO LEAD ECOLOGICAL VEGETABLE FARMING?

Vegetable breeders have to answer on this question alone. Certainly, this type of production requires appropriate knowledge and experience. However, it may be an interesting alternative for conducting conventional production.
